Well, it's been just over a week since JhanaNight. Long enough for the post-event high to have settled down and allow for some proper Buddhist-like equanimous perspective.

The first thing that comes to mind is that you know that you're onto a good thing when people volunteer to do a 12 hour sit.  There's a big difference in the attitude of people who decide to drive (between) 2 (and 11!) hours to join an all-night sitting and that of individuals who do so because they are institutionally bound.   From the feedback on the morning after, it seems as if some people even managed to enjoyed it!  Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu!

The shift in attitude towards meditation that is evident from the success of JhanaThon is momentus.  JhanaThon Meditators took on a commitment, the benefits of which were certain only for entities other than the Meditators themselves - raising money for Santi and the profile of meditation.  The payoffs were entirely contingent from a self-centred perspective - nobody can be sure if 12 hours of stillness will make for 12 hours of frustration or 12 hours of peace.  The reason why this is important is that rebalancing our approach to meditation so that it is about more than 'me and my practice' is essential to the authentic establishment of Buddhism in Australia.  It is also essential to the potential of individual meditators to reach deeper stages of practice.

We had about 50 people do JhanaNight this time.  What are the chances of us getting 100 next year?  Imagine that: 100 people or more sitting all-night in the big cave.  That would just be so cool.

'nuff said

Yeah the webcam visibility was negligible after about 7:30pm. I thought about leaving on a few more lights but that would have detracted from the meditators' experience of the change in natural light. Another solution would be to use a webcam with better resolution.
